Tests take too long

The tests take 40 seconds on my machine which is far too long. The culprit is a recursive call to a `grind` function. These tests need to be restructured so they get full coverage of all cases (especially edge cases) but with a dramatically smaller runtime profile. The fat test executable should take no more than 1 second to run.
