That makes perfect sense, as I don't have write access for that package on Hackage.

No, it has a number of breaking changes that required updates in pandoc-lua-engine. Those updates have been done and are already on the main branch, so publishing pandoc-lua-engine ahead of pandoc is an option. However, I hope to commit some more changes to pandoc-lua-engine within the next 2 weeks.
