Notes: Integrating Agile and LxD

Core Idea

  • Combine Agile, Design Thinking, and Merrill’s Principles of Instruction to create effective, learner-centered, iterative education.

Adapted Agile

  • Agile ↔ Education: Similar need for planning + feedback.
  • TDD ↔ Backwards Design → start with assessment goals.
  • Design Thinking adds empathy + POV → learner-centered.
  • Sprint Cycle (2–4 weeks):
    • Backlog → Plan → Meet-users/owners (Empathy) → POV → User Stories
    • Development → Ideate (HMW) → Standup/Pinup/Kanban → Implementation → Test/Feedback → Burndown → Retrospective → Close

Design Thinking & LxD

  • Instructional Design (ID): Structured, goal-oriented, less flexible.
  • Learning Experience Design (LxD): Iterative, feedback-driven, human-centered, integrates UX/game/graphic design.
  • Human-Centered Design: Inspiration → Ideation → Implementation → Iteration.
  • Design Thinking Phases: Empathy → Define → Ideate → Prototype → Test.

Instructional Models

  • ADDIE: Analyze → Design → Develop → Implement → Evaluate.
  • SAM: Iterative prototyping (more agile).
  • UbD: Backwards design (results → assessment → learning activities).

Learning Theories

  • Behaviorist: Stimulus-response, rewards.
  • Cognitivist: Organization, repetition, metacognition.
  • Constructivist: Real-world, group learning, tangible outputs.
  • Connectivist: Networks, systems, AI, authentic projects.

Mastery Models

  • Mastery Learning: Advance only after mastery.
  • Traditional: Time-based progression.
  • Competency-Based Ed (CBE): Pace + feedback → mastery formalized.

Andragogy vs. Pedagogy

  • Adults (Andragogy): Self-directed, intrinsic motivation, relevant learning.
  • Children (Pedagogy): Teacher-directed, extrinsic motivation, structured.
