I still don't quite understand what you mean by the meta tag. If you explain it to me, maybe I can implement it. I thought a small button/link in the bottom left corner that lets you cycle between light/dark/system would be good.

I actually have dark mode enabled system-wide, and when I open the page, the background is already dark, but the text remains black. Unfortunately, that's a bit difficult to read.

Ah, sorry, I meant media queries.
Something like this inside of a style tag:
