Genuine question: they are just not synced -- but they're still in your vault, right? Or did they disappear in your vault too?

After importing them once again they showed up again.

However I think this behavior is not expected at all. Since all previous updates still retain all codes inside the auth app.

Could you clarify what exactly you mean by "importing"? Do you just mean you could re-establish the sync - or did you do something else?

Well I exported the JSON file from the main bitwarden app and import it to the auth app once again.

The synced ones disappear completely and don't come back. Re-establishing sync isn't possible. (I have no local ones)

What's needed?
After updating to BW2026.5.1 all synced codes in BWAuth 2026.5.0 disappeared. Since I don't have local (un-synced) codes, BWAuth is just empty. Sync is enabled. Samsung A36, latest patch release (Android 16, OneUI 8.5).
I still run BW2026.4.2 together with BWAuth2026.5.0 on a different phone and sync works fine there. Samsung A35, latest patch release (Android 16, OneUI 8.5).
