Hello,
I recently purchased an Xteink X4 about three days ago. I had been saving money for a long time to buy this device, and my father also helped contribute to the cost. This is my first e-reader, so it is quite important to me.
Since I was unable to order directly from the official website, I bought it from Shopee instead. It appears to be a Chinese locked version, as it came with a sticker on the back, and when connected to my computer it consistently shows “USB device not recognized.”
Because of this, I used an unlocker tool and tried different firmware versions to find one that would work for me. Looking back, I realize I rushed into the process without fully understanding it, which led to this situation.
After asking for help on Reddit, I was recommended to try Papyrix, so I installed it. However, after using it, I realized it is not suitable for my use case.
Issues I experienced with Papyrix:
1.Sleep screen does not work as expected for me. The cover image cannot be shown full screen, and it becomes faded/washed out after a few seconds.
2.I am unable to properly change system fonts, especially for Thai. The built-in font is not comfortable to read, and spacing/layout feels incorrect. I tried following the customization guide, but I was not able to complete it successfully. It also requires technical knowledge (Python/PowerShell), which I do not have.
3.I mainly use .xtch files for Thai ebooks, but page turning causes a stronger black flash compared to other firmware, which strains my eyes and gives me headaches.
4.The delete button placement in the library has caused accidental deletions more than once.
5.There is no option to jump directly to a specific page, only chapter-by-chapter navigation.
Overall, I can see that Papyrix is a well-made firmware with thoughtful design choices. It just does not fit my personal reading needs.
After installing Papyrix, I am now unable to flash other firmware versions. From what I understand, Papyrix does not support OTA updates, which may affect the usual flashing methods with OTA Unlocker.
I would appreciate any guidance on whether there is still a possible recovery method, or if the device is currently in a state where reflashing is no longer possible.
Thank you for your time and for any help.
