Would it be easy to add "Spherical" as one of the supported map projections?

Yes, it is possible to apply a spherical projection easily — although this would mean we also need to add mouse interactions to spin the globe. Once we can discuss how this should work, we can implement it.

Ah, I see - I forgot about the spin. Frankly I'm a little nervous about the advanced mouse interactions... How about this:

• If we decide to introduce more mouse interactions, we will add the spherical projection with the spin.
• If we decide to not include more mouse interactions, then, when you add the feature to allow the user to specify a center longitude for the maps, let's also allow the user to specify the center latitude (for the spherical projection only).

@huiwanpnnl, while I'm on leave, Seb has some ideas for improvements to the views. He might potentially have some ideas about enabling camera interactions with the mouse instead of requiring the user to use the buttons on the toolbar, while still ensuring the stability of views when dragging and dropping -- that could pave the way for us to have the spherical projections.
