As a Substance Painter user, I use the path tool a lot because it is non-destructive so that I can create and edit smooth shapes on a mesh. It is the only tool that would prevent me of moving to Armorpaint (and the only reason I have a Windows installation at the moment).
As far as I understand it, the path tool creates a 2D stencil from a spline that is then projected onto the mesh, so I believe half of the required logic is already implemented.
