I found your amazing work SmartHopper from Mcneel. Unfortunately, I am a Mac user myself. Not to miss such a useful tool as a heavy Grasshopper user, I did something to make it work(at least it seems to be). And the zip is how(readme doc and file for replacement). Though I haven't fully tested it, the pop-up window(pic 1 before and pic2 now) and the setting page(three blank tabs: General, Providers and Canvas Assistant before and all tabs:pic3 now) seem to be able to work

Hi @nofcfy-fanqi ! Thank you very much for testing and suggesting a fix! If the signature is the only issue, I'm so happy! I expected it to be harder to enable compatibility with Mac since I don't have any to test on.

I just created a new branch https://github.com/architects-toolkit/SmartHopper/tree/263-compatibility-with-mac to officially fix the incompatibility with Mac. Please, feel free to open a pull request with your patch. I'll verify changes and pull them to the next release.

Hi @marc-romu! Actually, the last version I posted is far from fully using the amazing work. I have tried to call AI models in AI Script as in the instruction video but failed:

1. Grasshopper keep loading when connected to a button or throw an error "The file scheme is not supported" when connected to a boolean toogle instead).

2. The chat button on the top right corner will cause an unexpected close of Rhino when clicked
3. The AI chat component will keep loading when put on the canvas.

And there's a good news that 0.5 of such 3 problems found has been solved by patching another .dll file, here is a quick result of calling deepseek-chat(at least I can call AI models in SmartHopper).
Maybe I will go on trying to make it more comfortable for Mac users and I will push a request ASAP after I organize what I did recent days and how to make it work(things like how to find a folder to drag files in and replace the target dll files)

Thanks for reporting these issues. What you mention might be related to three parts of code:

• Canvas button hook
• AI Chat webview dialog
• AI provider base

I'm sure I could easily point out the issue in code if I saw debug logs and code patches. Are you using Visual Studio for making changes to source code and compilation? If so, please publish the fork on GitHub, and I could help you with debugging. Please, read the contribution section.

Yes I do use Visual Studio but I am pretty green to GitHub so I'm not sure if I did the right thing to report the issue and push the changes. I've compiled SmartHopper from source on macOS and identified the root causes of the issues listed in this issue. Here's a summary of my findings and the fixes.

Test Environment

• macOS 14.6.1 (Apple Silicon / ARM64)
• Rhino 8.27
• .NET 9.0.304 SDK, targeting net7.0

Issues Fixed (3/5)

1. Authenticode signature verification (ProviderManager.cs)

VerifySignature() calls X509Certificate.CreateFromSignedFile(), which is a Windows-only API and throws PlatformNotSupportedException on macOS/Linux. This prevents all AI providers from loading.

Fix: Wrapped the Authenticode verification block in RuntimeInformation.IsOSPlatform(OSPlatform.Windows). Strong-name verification remains active on all platforms.

2. BuildFullUrl produces file:// URIs (AIProvider.cs)

Uri.TryCreate(endpoint, UriKind.Absolute, out var abs) behaves differently on macOS/Linux — relative paths like /chat/completions are parsed as file:///chat/completions (returns true with UriKind.Absolute), so the base URL concatenation is skipped entirely. This is the root cause of the "file scheme is not supported" error.

Fix: Added a scheme check: abs.Scheme == Uri.UriSchemeHttp || abs.Scheme == Uri.UriSchemeHttps.

3. ComponentStateManager deadlock (ComponentStateManager.cs)

ProcessTransitionQueue() fires state transition events while holding stateLock. On macOS, event handlers can re-enter methods that also acquire stateLock, causing a deadlock. This is why the AI chat component keeps loading when placed on the canvas.

Fix: Refactored to collect events inside the lock but fire them outside using Monitor.Exit/Monitor.Enter.

Issue NOT Fixed (1/5)

4. Chat button crashes Rhino (WebChatDialog.cs)

LoadInitialHtmlIntoWebView() calls this._webView.LoadHtml(html, new Uri("https://smarthopper.local/")). On macOS, Eto.Forms' WKWebViewHandler.LoadHtml() calls WKWebView.LoadFileUrl() with the base URI, but LoadFileUrl() only accepts file:// URLs. Passing https://smarthopper.local/ triggers:

NSInvalidArgumentException: https://smarthopper.local/ is not a file URL

This is an Eto.Forms bug (in WKWebViewHandler.cs lines 323-330 of the Eto source). A possible SmartHopper-side workaround would be to pass null as baseUri on non-Windows platforms, but I haven't tested this yet.

5. Provider icon (WinForms dependency)

I did not encounter this issue during my testing, so I cannot confirm whether it's still present.

Testing Results

• AI provider loading works (DeepSeek provider loaded successfully)
• CanvasButton chat window still crashes due to Issue 4 above

I've updated CHANGELOG.md and prepared the source-level changes (3 files + CHANGELOG) to push to the 263-compatibility-with-mac branch.

Hi @nofcfy-fanqi ,

You can test pre-release 1.4.0-alpha (https://github.com/architects-toolkit/SmartHopper/releases/tag/1.4.0-alpha). This is not tested yet, so it is not available from food4rhino. It includes your changes and some additional features. Since the Authenticode security check is not available in Mac, I created an additional SHA-256 hash verification check (still not tested). I also tried to fix the Webchat functionality by asking AI. I'm not sure if I made it work on Mac.

The compilation works in Windows, but I could not try it on Mac. Try it out and let me know what problems you run into.
