PHP 8.5 is on our roadmap for AL2023 and our team is actively evaluating this package and working through the necessary analysis. While we cannot commit to a specific delivery date at this time, we anticipate making PHP 8.5 available in early 2026. We remain committed to providing timely updates of PHP versions to help our customers stay current with the latest releases and security updates. We'll update this issue as we make progress.

Edit: Yes, I realize we're only 2 days into 2026, but not being able to run the latest versions of PHP has been a consistent problem across various AWS services for years, which is kind of annoying.

As of this release: AL2023 version 2023.10.20260120

AL2023 now supports PHP 8.5. You can install PHP 8.5.1 using sudo dnf install -y php8.5

$ cat /etc/amazon-linux-release
Amazon Linux release 2023.10.20260120 (Amazon Linux)

$ sudo dnf install -y php8.5

$ rpm -q php8.5
php8.5-8.5.1-1.amzn2023.0.1.x86_64

$ php --version
PHP 8.5.1 (cli) (built: Dec 16 2025 15:59:07) (NTS gcc x86_64)
