Add reference_count as a fl field in searches?

Hi,
For searches we can return both a list of citations and the count of the number of citations (citation_count). However for references we can only get the full list of references. Would if be possible to add a reference_count field? I don't always need the full list of references, but it would still be useful to know how many references there are.
