allow SecantInitialTangent to make multiple solving attempts

Add logic that will let (for now) SecantInitialTangent reattempt to solve the problem on a bad user guess for ds0. Will just scale and clamp ds by 0.5, and fail if tangent is not computed by ds=dsmin
