About the PR

This PR aims to add species from Starlight server, shadekins, it is a bit of a watered down implementation, due to its... complex nature in that server, this one is made to be less flashy

Why / Balance

I believe it is one of more popular species, with unique behaviour and culture, i think it is a very nice addition to the server.

From balacing standpoint:

  • Resistances - they are on the weaker side, having weaknesses to some common type of damage in this server: Radiation, Shock, Bloodloss, Heat, while serving resistances to cold and callular, rather rare types of damage.
  • Breathing immunity - Shadekin are known for their lack of lungs, they do not breathe, nor can they be given lungs, from balance standpoint i understand that this might be considered quite "op" in some servers, however here, i believe most people would be able to find a carp in less than 10 minutes from entering a shift, and self operate to give themselves space animal lungs, it is a QoL more than anything. However, due to them lacking lungs in general, as well having no ability to implant lungs into themselves, they are unable to breathe atmos, with some popular combat mixes that are used recently, as well as canisters saving on ships, this i believe is a very big negative, since they cant breathe gases as Nitrium and Halium, they are excluded from that meta.
  • Night vision - This is more powerful of their abilities, however, it also has one big negative, night vision is removed the moment shadekin put on any flash immunity gear, which includes some of the good masks and glasses, as well as makes them have to stay vulnerable to those. This is a night vision ported from Starlight, which looks a bit different than the one we have, i think however that its way better for longer use, less straining for the eyes.
  • Flash weakness - they get flashed for twice as long, and the effect is harder on them.

All light exposure mechanics have been removed from them, not only are they expensive on the server, they are also too complex and laggy.

  • add: Added Shadekin; A species of 4 eared felines with bright, monocolored eyes. They may or may not be from an adjacent plane and are drawn to realspace and especially anomalous zones (i.e. the Monolith) to sate their own curiosity. Think kind of like Vortigaunts. They are hemophilic and due to sheer complexity of their own bloods composition have issues regenerating it (170% more bleed and 1/4th of normal blood regen). They take more damage from the common damage types Radiation, Shock and Heat but less from cold and the rare cellular. Their hyper-evolved eyes grant them intrinsic nightvision if unobstructed by flash protective gear and they do not breath. Any sort of flashes last longer and are more intense. The guidebook entry provides more details on them and their lore.

Changelog needs to be more descriptive. We also need to discuss the lore of Shadekin, they need to fit the overall theme of the server. Their abilities also seem quite powerful, with night vision and all.

The code could also use improvements, namely Starlight copy and pasting the already existing night vision system.

On some servers shadekin can phaze teleport, so simple nightvision is still not that big of an adventage

Up next:

Clarificaiton on some aspects including the question "Brighteyes ugh":

In this PR (And hopefully if implemented in any future PRs) they do not get any special active abilities nor are they going to be limited in eye color or anything if implemented. I dislike that bit alot on SL and HL. Shadekin should just be that: Four eared cats with a long stabilizing fluffy tail not native to realspace while being drawn to anomalous areas. No weird phaseshifting bullshit in realspace, no OP hypermending ability when in darkness. No blood that when drunk makes you feel like you have been hammered by drugs like its currently on both SL and HL. No crazy bullshit glare reminiscent of vampire antag glare. No BRIGHTEYES AND BLACKEYES. Just that. Shadekin. Essentially this PR is taking them out of the weird niche zone and the strange associations that are put onto them many times.

The passive upsides while strong come at a considerable downside of being hemophillic. Get shot twice in combat? Time to bandage and inject chems. Get shot a bit more? Time to take a break and wait for your blood to regen or start pumping chems. Heat damage? Well you take more burn damage. Radiation? Same deal. Keep in mind that blood regen is also affected, they regenerate around 1/4th of what a normal person would regenerate in the same timeframe.

In the next comment I will provide a general overview on their lore, do keep in mind its adapted from FH so changes might be required further.

Here is the current short proposal for the guidebook entry and possible idea where to settle them in lore:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Y5pnfHaDvwdgL7hCL42bPzBkVbyNeiioAGC8YpeYy9M/edit?usp=sharing

(Link should be working now)

I have an entire lore doc on Shadekin compiled for FH which has some differences (FH is circa 2326) and with some adaptation (meaning we can for instance leave out the eye color association and the admittetly bad community dividing blackeye/brighteye bear bull bear bull stuff) could probably be made to work very well.

The example Shadekin intially shown in this PR was an edge case and is a tail that is usually commented out in most codebases. I will provide Fasuh with an example Shadekin for putting them in armor to show that they should look fine with mono gear (especially with U.I.. I can picture that look very well on them).

Similarly laxative-style designed characters can be attained by:

  • Lizards (black and neon pink with that massive gigantic snake tail they can pick)
  • Humans (Fro in pink with neon green beard)
  • Dwarfs (Max width, minimum height with ill-advised beard and hair combination)
  • Vulps (any ultrabright neon color, theres some very interesting things you can do with them)
  • Rodentia surprisingly
  • Avali, Resomi, Tarjaran

Unaffected by deliberately trying to make an eyesore are Diona and Vox, they kinda look too alien for that to take effect.

Anyhow if required feel free to ping me in discord (Irkalla or Ereshkigal) if you want a more extensive loredoc, I would really love to make them work on Triad.
