Error enumerating joysticks - get_name

It seams there is problem enumerating game devices. Get_name(_j) gives s fault - invalid utf-8 character. Could be something with the underlying pygame/SDL library. Or even bad firmware in the game comtroller itself. And guess it depends which controllers you have attached. I have six controllers. From what I coould see it failed for my Fanatac SQ 1.5 shifter connected via USB adapter. Some garbage charcters at the end of the name. Maybe surround with a try catch to avoid crashing?

Thanks, I've added a try/except as you suggest so it shouldn't crash now but of course I can't test it. I don't know what to do to make it work with your shifter - apart from getting pygame fixed. See V1.5.27.

Thanks, now it doesn't crash and I can get it running :)

From what I can see the enumeration/order of connected drivers is somehow random as well - so you cannot really "bind" to its number. You really need something "static". What you really would like is to use the controller's GUID - but from what I could see it wasn't exposed from pygame/SDL.

So what I can see is that the enumeration (from pygame) really has flaws, or maybe my PC (USB bus) is reporting real weird stuff. I have two controllers ending up with this "utf-8" problem. One all the times - a G27 usb adapter for the shifter by Ricmotech, having a "®" in its name. The second one - my real shifter - Fanatec SQ1.5 shifter using USB adapter. I need to restart the program multiple times before the second controller is recognized. But anyway, it does work 👍 Guess you can close this issue.

Good news, thanks. I remembered that I think I had some code which read game controllers without using pygame. rFactor doesn't seem to use the controller names, just some 1,2,3... device number. If I plug in my Xbox controller I have to remap my wheel in rF because it's moved from 1 to 2. pygame seemed better because it was identifying the devices.

Something to play with.
