I'd like to officially request this feature as of late 2025. I know this has been requested-and-denied a ton over the years, but I think as of now, all the previous issues around implementation have been resolved on Apple's side.
- The 4K tag does not cause issues with Home Sharing. I just verified this on two Macs running macOS 15.6.1 by playing a 4K HDR rip of my Spider-Man: No Way Home 4k Blu-ray (nearly a 100 GB file).
- The 4K tag is now fully utilized in the macOS TV app. Newly imported files that have a 4K tag manually added in Subler are appropriately renamed by the TV app as "[Movie Title] (4K)"
I can't recall what other issues there were with enabling auto-tagging for 4K.
My current use-case for the tag is for version control of different resolutions of the same video in the TV app. Having the 4K tag added automatically saves me a ton of headache, and since my TV Library folder feeds my Plex library, it helps with version control there too.
I can test any other previous issue for verification. Thanks!
