amdirt version pulling fails and falls back to master when github is not accessible

This is an edge case, however the deNBI network has been blocked by Github (or rather quierying when a PAT has not be defined).

This means when a user using aMDirt loads viewer, it does not get a list of versions to pick from but only master.
While fallbacking to pull from master is fine, it is not 💯 ideal.

I wonder if there is another way of getting the list of release versions/tags without directly querying GitHub with it's API?

I think this is the same issue we have with other AMDirT functionality that downloads the data from GitHub. For the sub-command validata, we have add a local option when there is a local installation of amdirt on the computer: #160

I think we could add this to the sub-command viewer, too.

Yes, this would be a neat feature. I will keep this issue open and will add it.
