Thanks for the patience as I've been looking into this.

I found that the reason that my MathML was getting mangled in Chrome and Safari, but not Firefox, was because I was outputting MathML 3, which is not supported by Chrome or Safari. They only support MathML Core.

When I change my code to output MathML Core, the problems go away.

I can change SMPTE ST 2094-50's text to export MathML. For editing, I will continue to use MathJax-like syntax, but I can use a script to substitute the MathJax with MathML offline. This is similar to what I do for the T.35 syntax (I author the syntax in a text file and use a script to insert it into the text).
