Add test suite

The project currently lacks a test suite. Adding tests would help ensure reliability and prevent regressions during future development.

Yes, it does need a test suite to validate new changes.

This is a very old project with roots in Debian origins, not sure why this was not thought before.

Any suggestion for choosing the test-suite will be appreciated?

I think it is better to use the standard Test::More module for writing tests, as it is widely adopted, well documented, and included in the core Perl distribution.
