O3 dapi provider not found when running example code

npm version 6.13.2
node version 13.3.0

running the example in README.md results in error message ->
{ type: 'NO_PROVIDER', description: 'O3 dapi provider not found.' }

O3 desktop app is installed and running. https://neodapitestbed.o3.app/ methods all work correctly.
