How to share a list with another user?

I'm not sure how this could be accomplished - I've tried creating. .ttl file pointing to the container of a different user (that has been shared with me) - but this does not work.

Hi there, at the moment this isn't supported. The way Focus loads tasks is by loading the containers, and each task is a document.

The only way that comes to mind to make this work is listing someone else's container in your own type index... But that's not how the type index is supposed to work, and I'm not completely sure that it would work either. But maybe you can "share" a workspace like that. If you try it and it works, let us know :).

Otherwise, I'll take this as a feature request. Though to be honest, I don't think I'll be working on this anytime soon (this is open source though, if anyone wants to work on this I'd be happy to help them get around the codebase).

I can confirm it does work. I have created a workspace for my son and added his lists to my type index.

I think it does work conceptually here - the type index can point to containers on other pods, and the implication is that as a user I have access to and want to use the shared list.
Obviously the permissions on the shared list should be set up to allow access too.

The private type index by default at https://my.pod/settings/privateTypeIndex needs an extra entry of the form

I actually came here to add a feature request that the dialogs to add new lists support adding existing lists (e.g. https://other.pod/tasks/) rather than assuming the list needs to be created. This would then avoid needing to manually update the type index.
It seems this issue is a good place for this feature request even though it may have other use cases too.

I think it's better if you create a different issue for that. I may work on that at some point, since it doesn't seem too difficult to implement. But sharing lists, even if it works with the type index workaround, is something that requires more changes to the way the app works, so it's not so likely that I'll look into that.

On closer inspection, it looks like "new workspace" already supports this functionality.

i.e. to add a shared workspace, go to the sidebar and click "new workspace". Expand "advanced" and untick "create container url automatically". Instead, specify the URL of the workspace that was shared with you.

I'm getting some unstable sync behaviour and will post an issue when I can replicate it (sometimes type index not modified, sometimes duplicate lists and tasks created).

I haven't yet tested what happens if the user only has access to some lists within the workspace.

Edit: I've confirmed that the sync behaviour is that while it looks fine locally it fails to sync and then duplicates the remote workspace. I've filed two issues #28 #27

I would be curious about the ACLs that you have set up in your son's container. My aim is to reduce to the least minimum the permissions granted.

I've now tested a case where I manually added a task list container to the type index where the workspace was not shared.
I can confirm it worked fine, i.e. the task list was visible even though the parent workspace returned a 403.

@jg10-mastodon-social sorry - may I ask what is the ACL you set up on the shared container? My tests (with igrant.io default "share with" UI action) are not as positive as yours (ie. a 403 is returned to the caller)

I used https://waceditor.patrickhochstenbach.net to edit the privileges and have read, write, append assigned to another webid, applied also to child resources.

I'm not familiar with igrant.io. Does it use WAC or ACP? Is it possible you specifically need to also grant access to the client id https://focus.noeldemartin.com/clientid.jsonld?
