The Solution: Automated .obj Loading

To solve the "manual input" problem, you need a Model Loader that can parse the Wavefront (.obj) text format and convert it into a data structure (like a std::vector of structs) that your graphics API (OpenGL/Vulkan) can understand.

1. The Structure of an .obj File

An .obj file is just a text file. If you open one, you’ll see lines starting with:

v: Geometric vertices (x,y,z)

vt: Texture coordinates (u,v)

vn: Vertex normals

f: Faces (which vertices connect to form a triangle)

For loading models with textures we will need to have a way of storing multiple textures, see this issue for more information.

I was thinking of make our own way of loading models, if we use a library we could use tinyobjloader.

since you already got a method to map textures onto things, we can use that to make a better version. because lets say somebody models a person or a tree, it would be a mindfuck to map the textures for it, obj can do this automatically im pretty sure

Is there an alternative for tinyobjloader? Because it only supports obj I think (according to the name)

obj is a fine file format, there is no reason to do anything else, and there are converters for like every 3d model format if the model they want isnt in obj
