Describe the Bug

I get 2 fatal errors after I update from version 407 to 2026.409.171120.
I get:
Fatal: Unable to find display or encoder during startup.
Fatal: Please check that a display is connected and powered on.

It worked before I updated. I've tried to manually enter my GPU and Displays but nothing happens when I do.
All I can see in logs is CAP_SYS_ADMIN not being permitted but I've made sure to use sudo setcap cap_sys_admin+p $(readlink -f $(which sunshine)) and it should be ok. I've also tried to set different displays to make sure it's not just that monitor that's reporting issues but all my monitors says the same.
The log states I'm "forcing" to use NVENC encoder but even on AUTO it reports the same.

Expected Behavior

Detecting and and using both GPU and Display.

Downgrading to Version 2026.408.194927 resolves the issue.

Looks like it's immediately switching to KMS. I've had that behaviour on my end before the changes in #4931 as well (since the initial portalgrab implemenation went live) but didn't think to much of it as it looked like an issue with my setup.
Could that be related to this line (which is not coming from portalgrab):

Unfortunately no reason is listed (another weird thing). Does it work if portalgrab is chosen for capture explicitly?

Also looks like KMS is seeing one monitor and portalgrab reports two (but Wayland is also as we can match both to names).
I'll add some further checks on streams to be considered but this looks like it's due to not even considering portalgrab first.

@psyke83 Could this be related to your changes for dropping capabilities in portalgrab? I have the suspicion it might be. We have to connect to the portal earlier now for display enumeration and therefore have to drop capabilities to do so, which in turn seems to break KMS encoder probing.

It's possible, yes. Will be able to verify in a few hours. If setting the capture explicitly to kms works, then it's very likely to be this. We should only drop capabilities when we've committed to the capture method, so not during startup probe.

It's possible, yes. Will be able to verify in a few hours. If setting the capture explicitly to kms works, then it's very likely to be this. We should only drop capabilities when we've committed to the capture method, so not during startup probe.

Startup encoder probing requires dropped security as we cannot init a display without it. Therefore portalgrab can never be probed before any capture method requiring CAP_SYS_ADMIN (luckily thats just kmsgrab).

I've changed the display name enumeration in #4969 to return a dummy value until the portal is secured, which is done on the first portal display init (likely for portalgrab encoder probing). The capability drop now occurs at the same point where it did before #4931 which should resolve this issue.

Just want to add that I'm experiencing the same issue. Fedora 43 with KDE Plasma here too. AMD GPU with only a single monitor, though. Downgrading to the previous release also fixed the problem for me.
