What happened?

Hello,

I am running a Monte Carlo simulation in AB v.2.11.2 using the ecoinvent 3.11 database. Everything seems to work when I test processes originally contained in the database. But when I create my own model — even after adding all the uncertain input requirements — the Monte Carlo simulation does not run for the technosphere. I get the error:

ERROR | Real, positive scale (sigma) values are required for lognormal uncertainties.

At first I thought I had missed adding the sigma value, but even after verifying that everything is set properly the Monte Carlo analysis gives the same error. It does not matter if I select another type of distribution. I created a dummy process just to verify, and the error persists.

I also updated AB and tried an older version (2.10) and still have the problem. Is it just me, or has anyone else experienced this?

Hi @alideoro and @mandyzcummings. Thanks for reporting this. I tried on my computer, but I could not reproduce the error. I see in your environment (@alideoro ) that you have much more installed than what you get with the pure v2.11.2 conda installation. Could you please try to make a new conda AB environment where you test what you have done? See what my environment looks like below. My suspicion is that the error is a result of the installed packages. Hopefully we can identify the culprit. If it is not that, then it might indeed be an error in the AB or an error in the data somehow (which the AB shouldn't actually allow making...).

Hi Bernhard, thanks for replying. I found the problem and was able to solve it without installing a new environment. What I noticed is that one process (a dummy one) in my database actually had a sigma value of zero. I had selected the option 1,1,1,1,1 in the pedigree matrix, but a sigma value of 0 was assigned. This process was a dummy one and not part of my original model but it was part of my database.
Even though I didn’t use this process in the calculations and the other processes were fine, I was still getting an error and couldn’t run Monte Carlo. After I either deleted or updated the sigma value for this particular process, Monte Carlo ran successfully.

It took me quite some time to spot the problem because the process causing it wasn’t actually part of my calculations—it was an unused process in my database. I hope this information is useful
