Error conditions are not handled gracefully

When an error occurs whilst fetching the contributors, the fetching stops(mostly) but the user is not notified. This should probably be fixed either by popping up an alert box, or something more fancy.

We should also handle the case where the user has used their full rate limit(a significant possibility if they have not entered any credentials).
