modernize the app icon

The FlatFab icon looks a little dated. It could be nice to update it.

I really like the style of the new ones you created, as it clearly illustrates the fundamental idea of intersecting planar sections, which is missing from the current icon. Reviewing the Gnome HIG you linked, I think you definitely nailed the concepts there, and especially "If the app has a distinctive UI, a simplified, stylized version of it."

Maybe the intersection of two planar sections shaped like the letter "F" for FlatFab (e.g. modifying the first of the two designs shown, so each is shaped as an "F", then again looking at a mockup maybe I am wrong and simplicity is best to avoid unnecessary detail)?

Yes, I'd like to keep the 'F' somehow.

I found it difficult to have both 'F', as the icon become pretty complex, but we keep one at least :-)

What about something that merges the two ideas together - 1. a layout like the existing website logo (two F's that are coplanar and interlock, with the one on the right rotated 180 degrees), but also 2. with your updated style instead (the colour, shading and depth/thickness)?

Simplicity: a single F, in the style you created. That's it! The F itself contains a slit, the method for interconnecting planar sections.

I am not sure, admittedly I have never had a great eye for this sort of thing. Maybe your very first one is the best? (Two very simple square-like shapes intersecting orthogonally?)
