WashTag is born from a simple idea:
👉 wear clothes longer, wash smarter, and track usage.
Many garments (jeans, sweaters, jackets) do not need washing after every use. Yet habits and routines make us wash them more often, wasting water, energy, and shortening the lifespan of clothes.
WashTag is designed to help people make more informed choices, without being intrusive.
- Reduce unnecessary washing
- Extend garment lifespan
- Reduce water, energy, and detergent usage
- Provide clear insights on how often garments are actually washed
WashTag does not decide for the user; it only provides data and awareness.
- Simple: one button, one app, no unnecessary complexity
- Passive: unobtrusive, local-first
- Durable: battery lasts years
- Open source, focused: code and documentation are public, contributions welcome, but the project remains purposeful
- Small BLE tag attached to a single garment
- Button to record washes
- BLE communicates with a minimal companion app
- Data stored locally on the tag and in the app
- Replaceable CR2477 battery
- Transparent firmware and app
- Public documentation
- Encourages collaboration
Open source is meant for trust and improvement, not for complicating or changing the core purpose of WashTag.
- Firmware development
- Companion app development
- Testing on real garments
- Collection and visualization of washing statistics
The project is early-stage, but the direction is clear: make washing smarter, simpler, and more conscious.
