📌 Challenge Overview

Challenge Title:
Well-Known Accounts Posting Fake Ads

Difficulty Level:

  • Beginner
  • Intermediate
  • Advanced

Description / Scenario:
A well-known social media account (YouTube) was used to launch a "promotion campaign" that mimicked an airdrop. It required users to transfer a certain amount of digital assets to a specific address in order to receive double the amount in return.

Learning Objective:
Do your own research. Simply checking the address on Etherscan would reveal that it's not even a smart contract account. You can also see numerous victims sending funds and getting scammed.

Phishing Technique Used:

  • The scammer first compromises well-known social media accounts related to cryptocurrency, such as the official YouTube account of the Ethereum Foundation. These accounts have credibility and reputation.

  • They then purchase ads through Google and leverage Google's powerful recommendation engine to target crypto enthusiasts. The ad promotes an “airdrop” and claims that any wallet transferring more than 0.5 ETH will receive double the amount back.

  • They manipulate the comment section, filling it with fake "success stories" and some comments from users claiming they were skeptical at first but still received the money—further convincing doubtful users to proceed.
