Using a lot of blocks

I am ready to start my DCC++ project in n scale with a fair amount of track and thus a fair amount of blocks. Using individual pins on the MEGA would not nearly be enough. I am therefor looking for a serial/bus like system I could use to connect all the blocks to the Arduino.

My knowledge in electronics and software is pretty good and if there is no solution I'll probably make something myself but someone must have already did that but i just can't seem to find it online.

There are a number of options for this. I'd recommend looking into LCC (OpenLCB) or C/MRI.
