Noob question #13

Hi

Very much a noob with NAS/Linux etc. Hope I am asking appropriately and in the right place, googled around but found little to no useful info.

Basically I am wondering - what actually is this for ? What could it do for me ?

Would primary use case be e.g. for someone ripping TV to their computer or something ?

I have a million video files in all kinds of formats, ocassionally they need to be transcoded to be able to play back (low-powered Synology, relatively, but with the hardware video chip) - could this e.g. go through all my videos while the NAS is not busy and make all weird formats into a standard one that can be read across the board ?

Looked around github at some other projects and starting to take an interest, but like I said, very much a noob - if anyone can humour me with some explanations I'd be grateful. Or if this area for posting ("Issues") is NOT a normal forum but rather just to report bug or something, I'm very sorry! Where if anywhere would such a normal discussion forum be then ?

In general I'm struggling to find ANY info on much of the very interesting packages at e.g. Synocommunity.com, but usually all the info there is is just a sentence or two. Doesn't Synocommunity / independent Synology users/creators have a forum apart from the official synology.com one ?

Thanks
Maria
