Ubuntu 20.04 Deprecation on 6/30/25

Overview

Ubuntu 20.04 is in the process of being deprecated, and may become unavailable any time after 6/30/2025.

Timeline

May 31 2025: Image removed from portal, but existing pools should continue to work
June 30 2025: Image becomes completely unavailable

5/19/2025 - 6/30/2025

• Migrate all repos from ubuntu-20.04 to ubuntu-24.04 (preferred) or ubuntu-22.04 (as needed)
• [optional] Also upgrade from ubuntu-22.04 to ubuntu-24.04, because why not?

6/30/2025

• Ubuntu 20.04 may become unavailable any time
• When it does, any remaining pipelines using ubuntu-20.04 will start to fail
• [preferred] Investigate failures as they come up, migrate pipelines off ubuntu-20.04
• [if necessary] Map image ubuntu-20.04 in our pools, to redirect to an ubuntu-22.04 image. This will allow pipelines to "keep using ubuntu-20.04", even though they're actually running on ubuntu-22.04.
